But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the manFor out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness,  blasphemies:

Teaching the Art of Hatred

Hitler once made the remark that one of the things that he faulted the German people for was that they were too slow to hate. 1 He needed a people that could whole-heartedly turn against a defined enemy and develop so ruthless an attitude that all convention of society and war would not stop them in their ultimate goal of gaining Europe and later the World for the rule of the Aryan People. While as a culture the German people were never stereotyped for their demonstrative-ness, Hitler and Goebbels knew the value of using psychological methods, propaganda, religious fervor and belief, art, music and the written word to accomplish a radical change not only in an individual but in a society. Any who doubt the deliberateness of the plan to accomplish the goal of a change of heart, belief and attitude in the German people need but to read the early speeches of Hitler, Ley, Goring and Goebbels, or sift through hundreds or thousands of documents and letters indicating the precise architecture of quenching the German heart.

The Avenues of Quenching the Heart

If one thing could be said for the National Socialists, or "nazis" it would be that they were brilliant in their evil. While it is often reported that they were non-descript men from average backgrounds, the truth is that they were men of very mixed backgrounds: Heydrich, for example had parents who taught in a Conservatory, was an accomplished violinist and military official: one would not have expected him to become "the Butcher of Prague". Goebbels, had a Ph.D. in literary criticism, his advisor and chairperson had been one of the foremost Jewish Literary Critics of the day. Hitler, though not successful was a technically accomplished artist and vegetarian, and Himmler's interests were in agronomy. Even Eichmann had been a regular Protestant Church attender and Speer, an architect. Others were military men, scholars, a Jesuit, business men and even theologians. Within 10 to 15 years, they became soul-less automatons, blindly obeying a 'Fuhrer' without any consideration of consequences. They also become mass killers and perpetrators of the most methodical and sinister genocide in the history of mankind.

What turns a person from a fairly normal person with an unusual or extreme point of view into a calculated killer is not just a matter for psychologists, it is a discussion in which we are all involved. It is important to note though, that it was not just the Nazis who became heartless and void of conscience, but the social order and every citizenry of Germany as well as the Church, an unfathomable accomplishment. How did the Nazis accomplish this change in so short a time? We will first examine the general dynamics of "quenching the heart" which were meticulously planned, and then each in turn examine the effects in

  • 1. The Nazis
  • 2. The German Society &
  • >3.The Church.

The quenching of heart and spirit as the "final solution" or "Endlosung progressed, reached such proportions that there was not any cruelty which became unimaginable or inoperable. These processes will be each examined: they are as relevant for today and then.
